When my son was twelve years old, he wanted a puppy really bad and I decided it was time he was old enough to get one. We went to Pet Adoption Day and looked at all the pups. It’s almost like magic when a pup sees the boy that has he has picked to adopt him. This small black ball of fluff rushed toward Christopher and immediately they started bonding. Long fluffy hair, black nose, black tongue and black eyes.
I had never had a long haired dog before, so I asked what type of canine I was thinking about adopting. “It’s difficult to say, but for sure there is a lot of Chow in him, and I believe Malamute and maybe some Husky.” Hmmmm. I thought. I was told that he had a double coat, so he would always have a lot of hair. Hmmmmm. I thought. “He’ll be a big one for sure.” Hmmmmmmmmm. Did I mention I live in the deep South? Double coat?
I looked at Christopher and the small fluff of a puppy and could see I was all ready out numbered two to one. So, we adopted the small piece of fluff and took him home. They were inseparable and that fluffy puppy grew and grew and grew. Christopher named him Toby. Toby liked to dig holes in the back yard, and run up and down the fence line chasing the little Boston Terrier on the other side. I think the weirdest thing Toby ever did was eat the spark plugs and wires off of my push lawn mower. Don’t worry, Toby survived, the lawnmower didn’t.
I was raised around horses, so instead of a regular grooming implement, I bought a horse grooming “thing-a-ma-gig” and it worked quite well with all that hair. It was a running joke that we could probably take all the hair we groomed off of Toby and weave it into a rug or a fur coat.
He didn’t mind cats because I all ready had some when we adopted Toby and since he grew up with them, they were more like sisters and brothers. The kittens and cats slept draped one over his tummy, one under his neck and one hidden somewhere inside all that hair.
Toby was a sweet, gentle giant. A perfect pup for my son. That small ball of fluff turned into a Toby who became Christopher’s best friend.
Who would have thought!

When I was young I had a Catahoula Cur or sometimes call the Leopard Dog. For those of you who do not know what kind of dog that is, a Catahoula Cur is spotted with black and white spots on a gray background. The Leopard Dog is the Louisiana State Dog. Anyway, they are very smart and I raised mine, named Gomer, from a pup and he went with me everywhere I went on our ten acre piece of property. The property backed up to a river, so we had a beach that we would go to when the water wasn’t high. Blackberries and Dewberries thrive in sandy soil.
Every year around the end of June or the first part of July Gomer and I would track through the woods to go blackberry and dewberry picking. Every year my Mom would make jelly. One summer when Gomer was about a year old, I found that he was smarter than most other dogs. I was picking blackberries while he would go through the briars and scare out any snakes that might have gotten in my way. You ask how he was smarter? I looked down and caught him eating blackberries directly off of the bushes, not the red ones, only the black. He knew they were sweet and tasty. I left the berries on the lower limbs for him and I picked the high ones.
We hadn’t been picking long when Gomer barked and barked. I thought he had found a snake, but to my surprise it was a box turtle. This in itself was not unusual, but the fact that the turtle had purple coloring around his mouth was. The turtle had been eating blackberries too!!
Who would have thought!
